“The importance of the play area to the community and to our partner, Halifax Health, can not be overstated. From the moment we cut the ribbon, the significance and impact for good were apparent,” says Jim Ward, Senior Director of Brand Development.
Ward says that a play area was part of the original plan for the development.
“We know that children’s soft play areas are a true destination point for families and parents with children,” says Ward. “We also know that it allows them to stay at the property longer, which in turn helps our retailers. Significantly, the play area provides a safe, clean, fun environment for healthy play at a location where a busy mom can accomplish other tasks.”
The Halifax Health Pirate’s Cove Play Area features a large pirate ship, treasure chest and beautifully detailed sand crab. In addition, the poured-in-place rubber flooring adds a beach setting to the play elements and provides a safe landing for active children.
“The ship is a massive structure that kids are crazy about,” says Ward. “Along with that, the sand crab is very eye-catching. The colors are simply phenomenal.”
The play area, which was designed, manufactured and installed by PLAYTIME, LLC, also includes an exact replica of a tower from the Halifax Health campus bearing the hospital’s logo.
“That tower is very iconic in the community,” explains Ward. “Halifax Health was pleased that we could include it in the play area.”
The partnership with Halifax Health also includes mile-marker placards and light-pole banners along a fitness trail that CBL & Associates built around an adjacent, 7-acre lake.
“There is a half-mile trail around the lake and the hospital installed mile-marker placards so that people can see how far they’ve walked,” says Ward. “It’s a perfect amenity for the hospital to spread the word about the importance of health and fitness.”
Perhaps most striking of all is the use of nighttime lighting on the play area’s shade sails. The lights cast alternating colors against the white shade sails at night, creating a festive ambiance for evening shoppers.
On breezy days, nearby fountains in the lake provide a cool mist that reaches children playing in the hot sun.
“It’s really a beautiful setting,” says Ward. “The feedback from Halifax Health has been extremely positive and support from the community has been tremendous. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership in the Port Orange marketplace.”
